The Year of Essentialism: Doing Less, Better

notebook-computer-chill-relax

It’s 2017 and I’m excited. While I don’t believe in resolutions, I do like to set my intentions for the year.

I like to reflect on what I’ve learned and let evaluated experience inform how I’m going to move forward.

2016 was the year of execution. I focused all my time, energy and resources on getting key things done. I’ve learned a lot through the experience.

I want to make it a tradition to create a context or a frame for every year moving forward. This will support me with accomplishing all that I plan to do this year.

Over the past week or so, I’ve been thinking deeply about 2017. I’ve made it a point of emphasis to focus more on less. There are some big things I want to do in my life and I’m clear it’s going to start with what I have right now.

I’m prioritizing my life in a way I’ve never done before. As a result, I’m calling this the year of essentialism. What I mean by that is I’m focusing on doing less better.

I’m identifying all the distractions in my life and removing them. I’m also identifying the few key actions I need to take to have my year turn out in the most fulfilling way possible.

My intention is to get laser focused on a few key progress-generating activities. The lionshare of my time, resources and energy on my one thing. My one thing is writing.

I’ve wanted to build a career around writing books and speaking engagements since I was a child. In fact, this was first thing I remember ever wanting to do.

I got clear about this desire of mine after deep thought and decided to go for it with every fiber of my being. So that’s exactly what I am going to do.

Becoming An Author

I’m committed to self-publishing at least one book this year. I’m not exactly sure what that book will be about, but I’m clear that I will become a published author. (Feel free to tweet me what you’d like to see me write about).

If I’m going to write a book, I’m going to need to write – a lot. And I can’t just write when I feel like it, I’m going to have to write daily and publish my work if I’m going to grow as a writer.

If I’m going to write and sell books I’m going to need to build an audience first. That means I’m going to have to ship my best work with consistency.

So I’m going to put my ass on the line and get some reps with shipping my work, daily. Come hell or high water, you can expect for me to publish my writing here on my blog.

Again, I have no idea that it’s going to take to do that. What I do know is that writing daily is going to give me the best chance to become a prolific writer.

500 Words

Inside of my commitment to ship my writing, I’m going to write at least 500 words a day.

Why 500 words?

Well, I’m leaning on the recommendation of best-selling author Jeff Goins. I admire and respect the platform he’s built and his body of work. I’ve been following him for a while, and he says it all started from a daily habit of writing at least 500 words.

Beyond Writing

There’s are a few other things I’d like to do in 2017, but they’re icing on the cake as far as I’m concerned.

My one thing, my must this year is to self-publish at least one book.

I’m sharing this with you for accountability. I hate not being congruent with my word, so feel free to come back here and see that I’m staying true to these words.

I’m committed to creating the most fulfilling life possible. It would be an honor and privilege to support you and invite you to be a part of my journey.

It’s going to be one helluva year.
