Let’s get one thing clear here before I go on any further, skills are paramount. As in very necessary.
Skills aside though, the one thing that trumps everything else, the thing that weighs most heavily on one’s success in business (or life) is relationships.
I’m a firm believer that who you know will get you there, but what you know will dictate how long you stay there. No different with business. All things being exactly the same, people will do business with and support the person they know over the person they don’t. They will do business with their friend or person they trust over they person they don’t know.
When you have relationships, you have business. Just because you have a business doesn’t mean you’ve earned trust and nurtured relationships.
I’ve noticed something about people I know that are very successful. Again, let’s assume that possessing a skills is a prerequisite for a moment. The one thing that they all have in common is the ability to establish and nurture relationships no matter where they go. They leave one job and immediately have another. They start a new business venture and immediately get things jumping.
How? They have relationships, mutually beneficial ones.
When people know, like, and trust you everything else falls into place. They get comfortable and that when the best kind of business happens.
A mutual relationship is the ultimate value proposition.
Make yours count.
