Branding is a process that consists of several different steps and takes place across many different platforms and mediums. Branding is a very broad terms as there are a handful of different types, each with their own perks and drawbacks. All of the latter explained should be practiced, some with more emphasis depending on the type of brand you hope to create, the dynamics of your business, and your target audience.
1) Co-Branding
Partnering with another brand to achieve reach.
Example: Apple and Nike coming together to create the Nike Plus Kit.
2) Digital Branding
Web, Social Media, Search Engine Optimization, Driving Commerce on the Web.
Example: Utilizing social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc…
3) Personal Branding
The way an individual builds their reputation.
Example: Creating a personal website like this one! ;-)
4) Cause Branding
Aligning your brand with a charitable cause or corporate social responsibility.
Example: Companies like Gap, Apple, and Dell aligning themselves with Bono’s (Product) Red; a brand designed to engage business and consumer power in the fight against AIDS in Africa.
5) Country Branding
Efforts to attract tourists and businesses.
Example: Bahamas creating ad campaigns focused around Paradise Island and the Atlantis Resort.
Act Accordingly.
